Case Closed!

After a tough day on the set of NBC's Law & Order, the 30-year-old star unwinds in her foyer (really!)

Space Saver:

"New York City apartments are very small, so even if you've got a [modern-style] two-bedroom like mine, space is hard to come by. I was born in Germany, but my family moved here when I was 1. When I moved into this place, about three months ago, I decided to really utilize this foyer. I added a chaise (which I got from Trilogy, an antiques dealer in Bedford, New York, where my mom lives) and a folding screen from an antiques shop in SoHo. I have a full-length mirror behind it, so I can change and try on clothes. The foyer is right next to the front door, but I wanted it to be really livable!"

Culture club:

"My style is very eclectic, and I am a sensualist: Everything is textured- like leopard pillows on a leafy fabric chair. I have a fern that looks like it belongs in the Amazon, a lithograph print from Iceland, plus art from Mexico and Haiti. None of it is from the same era, but somehow everything is complementary. I've always been into interior decorating. I went to boarding school [in Sewanee, Tennessee], and my environment, form the time I was 14, has helped me maintain my sanity. I gain a lot of pleasure from the notion of what a home is."

Sweet retreat:

"This is my room of decadence. It's my first stop when I come home from work: I put down my bag, take a deep breath and lie on my chaise and chill. I'll memorize my lines [for Law & Order] and just relax before I enter the rest of the apartment- where I'm going to have to clean or check my e-mail. I don't think there are many places in your life where you can really take a complete break. But here I get a chance to get perspective on life."

Sing it, sister:

"I found this old record player in an antiques store in Nevada, and it actually works! I play Doris Day or Rosemary Clooney. Of course, I have to get it fixed every year, because it's way past its prime. When I sing along, Venus [her cute 9-month-old Doberman pinscher] just howls!"
